Bookworm Thursday

This is a wee bit later than I would have liked to post this, but here we go! The next book I'm going to read....drumroll please.....

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides! I know I had explained before that I just LOVE the Virgin Suicides, but I've never read anything else of his! I had this book for a loooong time (and only got it for a dollar)! So it's time for me to bust into it and fall in love. :) I've heard great things about this, and I hope it turns out better than the last book! Now onto the plot...

The novel begins with the 41-year-old narrator recounting how the recessive condition 5-alpha-reductase deficiency caused him to be born with female characteristics. The name he is given at birth is the feminine Calliope or "Callie". After learning about the syndrome as an adolescent, Calliope changes his name to the masculine name Cal. The first half of the story,Middlesex, is based on events that occurred prior to Callie's birth. At one point, the narrator briefly explains how his grandmother, Desdemona, predicted Cal would be a boy, while his parents made preparations for the birth of a girl. Throughout the novel, the narration periodically returns to the frame story of present-day Cal—a bearded man who is sexually attracted to women—foreshadowing the personal revelations of Callie.[12]
Flashing back to a small village in Asia Minor, the novel follows the stories of the protagonist's Greek paternal grandparents. Cal's grandfather, Eleutherios "Lefty" Stephanides, and grandmother, Desdemona Stephanides, are orphaned siblings who share a close bond. Despite their initial misgivings, their bond later develops into a romantic relationship. In the aftermath of the 1922 Greco-Turkish War and amid graphic scenes of the Great Fire of Smyrna, the siblings are forced to seek refuge by emigrating to America. On the eve of their departure, Desdemona agrees to marry her brother. Despite legal and social prohibitions against marriage between siblings, they can marry because no one in America knows they are brother and sister. They reach the United States and settle in Detroit, Michigan, in the home of their cousin, Sourmelina "Lina" Zizmo, a closeted lesbian, and her husband, Jimmy, a bootlegger. Lefty enters Jimmy's smuggling business, while Desdemona gives birth to a son, Milton, and later a daughter, Zoe. Lina gives birth to a daughter, Theodora or "Tessie". After she is made aware of the potential for disease in children through consanguinity, Desdemona becomes anxious about her pregnancy and the morality of her sexual relationship with Lefty. As his marriage declines, Lefty opens a bar and gambling room, calling it the Zebra Room.
Eventually, Lefty and Desdemona's son, Milton, marries Lina's daughter, Tessie. Milton and Tessie, second cousins, have two children, Chapter Eleven and Callie. Chapter Eleven[note 2]is a biologically "normal" boy, while Callie is intersexed. This is unknown to the family for many years, so Callie is raised as a girl. After the 1967 Detroit riot, the family moves to a house on the street Middlesex, located in the Grosse Pointe neighborhood. The novel's title is a double entendre,[14] in that it describes both his intersexual identity and the name of the street on which Callie lived in the 1970s.[11]
When she is 14 years old, Callie falls in love with her female best friend, referred to in the novel as the "Obscure Object".[note 3] Around this time, Callie has her first sexual experiences with both genders, the Obscure Object and the Obscure Object's brother. After Callie is injured by a tractor, a doctor discovers that Callie is intersexed, and she is taken to a clinic in New York where she undergoes a series of tests and examinations. Faced with the prospect of sex reassignment surgery, Callie runs away and assumes a male identity as Cal. Cal hitchhikes cross-country until he reaches San Francisco, where he becomes a part of a burlesque show.
The club where Cal works is raided by police, and he is returned to Chapter Eleven's custody. After learning that Milton had just been killed in a car accident, Cal returns to his family's home in Middlesex and stands in the doorway (a male-only Greek tradition thought to keep spirits of the dead out of the family home) as Milton's funeral takes place. Desdemona sees Cal as male for the first time, and in a moment of anagnorisis, she confesses to Cal that her husband, Lefty, was also her brother. Later, as an adult, Cal becomes a diplomat and is stationed in Berlin, where he meets Julie Kikuchi, a Japanese-American woman with whom he tentatively starts a relationship.

Sounds pretty darn interesting! Have any of you read Middlesex? What did you think?

So I think I'm ready to tell you about my new fun vlog series. So I know I have stated that I really wanted to stretch out my ears. Well, I'm finally taking the plunge and bought some gauges today. I'm going to do a few vlogs on it...how to take care of your ears, faq's, so on. I'm also planning on making products from my shop to take care of stretched ears. I'm so excited and I couldn't hold it in any longer. Expect the first vlog sometime next week <3 xo.

Not a normal post, but it must be said...

I assure you that this is not my normal type of post. And this won't be the last time you'll hear me speak of cancer. If you are a new reader, Hello :) Some of you may know, my father passed away with cancer in April of 2009. I watched with my own two eyes my father pass before me. It was the hardest, most difficult and painful thing I have, and probably will ever, experience in my life. So to hear of Steve Jobs' passing, it really tears my heart apart. I've of course (probably like many of you) heard this over the internet and news yesterday.

Many people, such as myself, are a loyal Apple, Inc. customer, who truly respect the company and will forever be life long customers, especially because of a mastermind like Steve Jobs. I've seen more than the fair share of people badmouthing his passing. "True heros are the one's who die for their country." Blah blah blah. Have you no compassion? He was human. He had cancer. He worked until TWO months before he died. That is a TRUE hero. My father was no different. He died just weeks after he stopped going to work. If none of you have seen cancer take someone's life, you are truly lucky. But for those of you like me who've seen the strongest man you've ever know be stripped down to nothing but dead weight, it's painful. And I am completly and utterly PISSED OFF at such cruel people on this planet. Even if Steve Jobs did nothing with his life, and Apple, Inc. never existed, he's still a human life taken by a terrible terrible disease. Fifty-five years old is far too young of an age to die. My father was only 51. If you love or hate Apple, another life was taken. Please just be respectful. He has a family in mourning right now, and cancer has yet again, won. I just hope people shut their mouths regarding whatever you feel about him and just keep your nasty opinions to yourself.

I found Steve Jobs to be brilliant, smart, respectable and influential. I'm so deeply saddened by his loss, and I will continue to be a faithful customer of the empire he built. Regardless of what he had done, he's a hero in my eyes. May you rest in peace, Steve.

Wennnnnailsdayyyy.

Yeup, you read that right, WeNAILSday :) Every Wednesday I'll be posting fun photo's and tutorials on how I do my nails. Next week, I'm going to show you my "Nail Ritual" to show you how my nails stay healthy and beautiful.

So last night when I was figuring out what I should do with my nails, I decided to give the Sally Hansen pen another try. I bought this pen back in April. I used it on my toes to give them a fun look. I hated it. It was really light, it smeared when I put a top coat on, and it just looked cheap. It was a bit expensive for this pen, so I decided to give it another chance.

I paired it with Nicole by O.P.I. The funny thing about this polish is that I'm not too fond of it. This isn't my most favorite shade of purple, but this is all I had that would work out pretty well with the pink. I'm so glad I used it! I don't actually recommend using Nicole nail polish. Why you ask...because it chips right away! I buff, polish, file and all that before I apply, and not even 12 hours into having it on, it chips. Maybe it's just the one I have, but it never lasts as long as I would like it to. I adore their colors though.

Here is the shade I used.

These colors were very much the perfect match! I can't wait to get my hands on more Sally Hansen pens. I have some great Halloween ideas for my nails, and a few other things in the works :D

And not nail related...you know the caramel apple pops/suckers, ohemgee. I had the Golden Delicious one (shown above, mostly eaten hehe) instead of the Green Apple. Soooooo good! I didn't even know they had other flavors until the other day. Try it, it's yummo!!! I'm so excited about some fun posts that's to come. I will be doing a vlog about something pretty exciting really soon. Stay tuned <3

Weekend Adventures and 10 Facts Tuesday!

Happy Tuesday everyone! Now, if any of you have caught on, I'm starting to (slowly) dedicate a certain post for each day of the week. I was formulating some ideas at work yesterday. And Here is a sneak peak of what I came up with...As we all know, Monday is my 52 weeks post. And now Tuesday I have decided to do a 10 facts about me....and whatever else that is fun and exciting to share. :)

So this weekend was a busy one, if I must say so myself. Saturday I had woken up at the butt crack of dawn to drive to Edgerton, WI to watch my nephew play football for his school. I was so excited, and very very tired. I had some fun stuff planned for us for the day, and I was so excited to share the news with him. Right when I got to the game, he waved at me. It was sooo cute. His mom told me that he was really excited that I was coming. I love that kid as if he was my own :)

He is player 1. I loved how cute all the kiddos looked in their uniform. All the kids that were playing were in 3rd and 4th grade.

I love love love this shot of him. He reminds me of a pro football player. So confident that he was going to win...sadly, they lost. But it's all in fun, right?

So after the football game, I told him that we were going to find a few cemetery's to take photos at and go to the apple and pumpkin farm to pick some goodies. On the way to pick him up, I noted three cemetery's we could stop at. The first one flew right by me (I couldn't exactly remember where it was). The second, they were cutting the grass...so we decided to leave because it was so small to begin with, and it felt awkward to take photos when they were trying to work. So we found the third cemetery. It was thee perfect size! It even had train tracks right behind it.

We had spotted these all over the ground that fell from the trees. I have no idea what this is. Miles thought it was a turd...oh boys. I decided to break it open to see what was inside...

A nut of some sort! I really wish I knew what this was. Do you??

It was very interesting to see the shape of it. I love finding neat things to break open.

I was so proud of Miles that day. I was talking to his mom at the football game telling her how glad I am that he is as sweet as he is. Most kids these days are very selfish and mean. Not my nephew. I think that was his first time at a cemetery. I was explaining to him how old some of these people were when they passed. He was sad, as was I. He started to brush off the dirt on their stones and pick flowers to place on them. I almost started bawling my eyes out. It literally broke my heart, but in a good way. And the funny thing was, I was doing the exact same thing, too. He was asking lots of questions about my dad that day as well. He was 6 when my dad died, and knew him, but not that well. He was asking me if my dad was buried at that cemetery and I told him no. But I also told him that he was with us, and he will always be. So he was asking silly questions about what my dad was doing. I told him everything he ever wanted to do. We had some Jolly Ranchers and he put two aside in the back seat for my dad to eat. Again, my heart broke.

We seen a Bluejay right when we pulled in, I've never seen one before! I was SO SO SO excited. I didn't whip my camera out fast enough, because it flew away :( We seen a hawk that day, too. I love wildlife.

Miles had wanted to try out my camera. I'm so impressed by his photos. Who knew an 8 year old boy would rock some pretty sweet pics. The one above was one of his. And check out these others...

I love the angle on this one.

Then we went to the Elegant Farmer to pick some apples and pumpkins. He loves apples. Hehe.

They even allowed us to climb the trees!

Then, we drove back home and I visited with him and his sister (isn't she beautiful) for a little while. My niece Brooklynn is so advanced for only being 8 months old. She is the happiest baby I've ever met.

And she looks so so much like Miles at that age. They are very much related <3 Now onto 10 Facts Tuesday!

\\ 10 Facts About Yours Truly //

I am one of those people who really hate it when people talk on the phone while driving. I find it just as dangerous as drunk driving.

Speaking of phone, I'm not a huge fan of talking on the phone. My mouth/throat gets dry, and I don't hold much interest in the conversation after awhile. When I was in a long distance relationship, sometimes we'd talk on the phone for a good couple hours, and I'd be the only one talking. I haaaated that (I wasn't a fan of holding a conversation with myself).

I was born a blonde. When I hit about 8 or 9, my hair started to turn to a light golden brown. Sometimes I joke around with my family and friends that the blonde in me never left :p

I was a witch for Halloween the majority of my childhood. I was also Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, a Princess, and an Angel.

I've never been able to do a cartwheel ever in my life. I've always been too scared. And I failed the tumbling class back in grade school. Oops.

I've been using computers since I was 5 years old (18 years!)....my parent's always told me to go to school for computers because "I'll make a lot of money" and that "I'm really good at using computers." I've never been interested, and I can really care less about the amount of money I can make. I find technical stuff about computers to be really boring.

I originally went to college to become a Registered Nurse. I went all throughout high school clueless of what I wanted to do with my life. Someone mentioned nursing (it's a HUGE job in my town), so I took some health classes in high school and fell in love...but I didn't love it enough to follow through with it (mainly because I had to drop out to take care of my dad, and after he passed, the last thing I wanted to be surrounded by was sick people). I'm two classes away from getting into the Nursing program.

Speaking of college, I'm one of those people who think that you do not need an education to be somebody. I see so many people who are successful and happy just by finding a job that makes them happy. Some start their own business, some are into management. No matter what their job is, being happy is the only important thing, not a piece of paper...but to each their own, right?

I really really really want to stretch out my ear lobes. I've been going back and forth with myself for a long time whether or not to bite the bullet and do it. I'm scared of the scary things you hear about...blowouts, they'll never close, infections...But I've been researching it a lot and am almost ready to take the step. I just wish I had someone to ask questions about it, seeing as though I know nobody who has them :(

I'm an avid and loyal customer of Apple, Inc. I own almost everything they make. I know a lot of people don't like Apple because it's a 'Style' thing. But I buy things from them because they work, flawlessly. I've never had a problem with them and will continue to be a lifetime customer of them. I've owned an iMac since 2007 and am still waiting to get my first virus. I couldn't say that when I owned a Windows computer!  :)

Stay tuned tomorrow for the release of the Weekly Wednesday post <3

52 Weeks - Week 3

This photo is apart of the color film pack I had bought, along with the black and white film. I only had a small handful develop out of the color film because I had no clue what I was doing, plus I think I ruined the film by overexposing it. This is one of my favorite shots that (kind of) turned out. It's of my hanging owl hot plates, a Halloween Kitty that was my mom's for at least 30 years, and a cross that was hung in my dad's casket when he passed away. I love the lighting and how the coloring turned out. I can't wait to order more color film to experiment with it!

New Items!!!!!

Eeeeek! It's been FAR too long since I've done one of these posts. But I am so excited to share with you guys some of my new products. And I have some fun news to share with you as well! Now onto the pics...

This one smells sooooo good! It's so fun and fall like!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this combo. I own a lotion with this combo and fell madly in love. How could I not pair them together in one of my balms?

Every year, my bestie and I always go to Cheesecake Factory to get ourselves a big ol piece of Pumpkin Cheesecake. After that, I knew I had to recreate that scent for my balms. I just want to gobble it up every time I take a whiff of this!

This was actually requested by one of my favorite repeat customers. She said she'd love a lavender balm she could use before bed to help her fall asleep. I love this one and I know this will be incorporated into my bedtime ritual from now on. Lavender is so classic.

Yeup. Fall almost always = Caramel Apples! Mmmmmm. Seriously, after I paired this together, I nearly jumped for joy and screamed because I loved how much this smelt. I woke up this morning and instantly put this baby on. And I sure did go MMMMMMMMMMMMM after, too. It's amazing. Truly. Most possibly. Amazing. Yummy.

And of course, a fall sampler set. This includes one Pumpkin Cheesecake, one Chai tea and one Caramel Apple lip balm in a muslin bag hand painted by yours truly. I wish I could keep these scents year round.

Now on to some other good news. I'd love for you to check out MaieDae's blog, as well as The Nearsighted Owl's blog. These two blogs are very much apart of my everyday favorite reads...and now I am sponsoring them both for the month of October. And while you are at it, keep a close eye on The Nearsighted Owl's blog. She may have a giveaway in store for you with some of my new fall goodies. I'll be sure to let you all know when you can get your hands on some of those goods.

Please don't forget to check my Etsy shop to grab some of these new fall balms! More items will be listed very soon. <3
